Montpelier Chapter 1898-1919

Organized 1898

The first Montpelier Chapter NSDAR was organized on January 27, 1898 in Orange, Virginia.

The organizing regent was Mrs. Annie W. Harper.

Our chapter feels it essential that we share some of this Montpelier Chapter's

State reports with others, since this is the only known history remaining.

By 1901 they reported, "The Chapter has a laudable scheme to build and establish a

public library in Orange. The lot has been bought and paid for,

and there is $127.00 in the Treasury."

The 1904 report included, "After finishing our work of founding, building and

paying for this Library for the County of Orange we felt that we could rest

awhile before starting other plans."

In 1906 they reported membership of 25 including one "Real Daughter,"

Mrs. Belle Jett of Rappahannock County.

The 1911 report included, "Before tendering the formal report of our Chapter,

we wish to say that for a year we have looked forward with anticipation of great pleasure

to greeting in Orange the annual conference of the Virginia Daughters."

The 1918 report included, "Since our last report all of our time and energy has been devoted

to War Work. After years of strife the spirit of peace is once more with us for which

we are duly thankful, and we will renew our efforts along the lines of DAR work."

The 1919 report: Montpelier Chapter Disbanded

The current Montpelier Chapter was established on October 12, 1965 in Madison, Virginia.
